Chapter 11 Nightly Pondering
Close to midnight, the streets of Misaki city are close to deserted.
It almost seems like the town itself went to sleep, as even the street lanterns appear to be glowing less bright then usual.
“Such a quiet night” Shana thinks as her feet take her further away from the hybrid’s hide-out with every step she makes.
“After all that happened it seems unfitting, as if they city doesn’t acknowledge anything from the past events. Then again, since most of it happened within a fuzetsu, techniqually the city couldn’t have noticed..Agh, stupid, stupid thoughts!”
She starts to raise her tempo as her walking slowly changes into running, then running and jumping.
As she jumps across the streets her feet don’t make any sounds, even the small animals that have come out at night, scavenging between the garbage do not get disturbed by her passing.
In the middle of a big jump the hunter spreads her fiery wings, and continues her journey across the night sky, beneath the brightly shining stars.
It is a full moon, and she cannot help but smile a bit as its light washes over her skin.
“Ever since I have watched those stupid romantic drama’s with Yuji on the television I have started to pay attention to these things” Shana realizes all of a sudden.
She knows she should be annoyed, since it is something a flamehaze doesn’t have to know, and that it will only distract her from her duties as a guardian of balance.
Yet for some reason it doesn’t bother her, on the contrary, she likes to gaze upon the world from this new point of view from time to time.
“This city is now my home” she thinks, “and there isn’t anything wrong with enjoying some of its beauty”.
The heat of the day is largely gone, and at the height of her flight a small breeze is blowing gently.
It brings her a smell of cherry blossoms, a scent that usually isn’t that early in the spring.
All of a sudden Shana recognizes the streets below her.
She walks them to school almost weekly.
It is the road to Yuji’s house.
Without thinking she flew straight towards him.
“it-it-s..not because I want to!” she justifies her actions to herself, “b-but because I have to protect the Reji Maigo!”.
But even she knows how ridiculous that reason sounds.
Yet she decides not to be bothered by it, the night is just way to beautiful for something like that.
As she descends and folds her wings ready to land, she sees that the light in Yuji’s room is turned off already.
He usually waits for her daily visit, and she feels a bit disappointed that he didn’t do so this time.
“If only that stupid hybrid didn’t get in the way!” she mumbles to herself.
Then she remembers how she told Yuji she would be away for a little while.
With Wilhelmina taking over his training, he had no reason to wait for her at all.
“I hope she didn’t go to hard on him” Shana thinks, as she quietly lands on the roof of the myste’s house.
Carmel-san never believed in slacking off, and it wouldn’t be the first time Yuji came back from a training session with her covered in bruises and completely worn-out.
He probably fell asleep the second his head hit his pillow, leaving Chigusa wondering why he didn’t even finish his supper..
“I hope he didn’t close the window” Shana thinks as she moves down the ladder Yuji placed next to his window all the way up to the roof, just for her.
The window is unlocked, and without disturbing the quietness of the night, the red hot eyed hunter takes a seat on the window frame.
Suddenly her hand touches something, followed by something liquid, and cold.
Shana almost screams in surprise, as she instinctively punches in the direction of whatever is it she is feeling.
With a sound like a gunshot she shatters the cup with now-cold coffee against the wall.
“Hmpf! Stupid Yuji! What idiot puts a filled coffee cup on the window frame” she thinks irritated.
Then her eyes widen for a second.
“Could it be.. that Yuji…put the coffee there for me? Just in case?” that thought somehow makes her feel unsure..but also very happy, and all of her irritation about her encounter with the hybrid earlier that night is completely gone.
Slowly she climbs through the open window, and looks around in the room, her eyes having enough light from the moon to see every possible detail.
Yuji is asleep, just like she thought he would be.
His clothes are piled up near the door, and his school book are scattered all over the floor.
Apparently he had tried to study for something until exhaustion got the best of him.
Slowly Shana starts to undress herself, until she wears nothing but her underwear.
Her face is slightly red by the thought of Yuji being in the same room as her.
One side of her is glad that he is asleep, but somewhere deep down inside of her..
She wouldn’t mind if he woke up and..took a peek at her.
If only because it would make a perfect excuse to touch- no Punch, Punch! him.
But Yuji doesn’t react in any way to her presence.
He has curled himself beneath the blankets on the left side of the bed, leaving the right side exposed and empty.
Shana smirks a bit, remembering the first time she sneaked into his bed from outside, and how she pointed her sword at him the next morning when she thought he touched her in her sleep.
Ever since, Yuji made a habit of sleeping on the far left side of the bed, leaving the right side for her.
Even now that he knew she probably wouldn’t come he did not sleep on the right side.
Quietly she goes lying next to him, grabbing the blanket and pulling it up all the way to her chin.
Shana continues to lay down like that for a while.
From a distance one could consider it cute, two small heads above a huge blanket.
Yuji makes a growling noise as he turns in his sleep, causing his hand to move from below the blanket and right next to his pillow.
She looks at his back and his medium to short brown hair.
Looking at him sleeping somehow gives her a warm feeling in her belly that she can’t really describe, but it feels nice..and strangely enough soft..if feelings can feel soft.
She remembers what Malachite said with his snarling voice : “So tell me, does the torch want to hold hands yet?”.
“We never did “ she says and she is startled by how loud her voice sounds in the dark room.
“We never did ‘ she repeats, whispering this time.
Her thoughts wander, and slowly Shana starts to put everything that happened into perspective.
Carefully, she weighs the pro’s and the con’s of the decision she has to make.
The moon is almost ready to go down and make way for dawn when Shana feels the inner peace she always feels when she knows she has made her choice, for better or for worse.
Softly, she grabs Yuji’s hand, and pulls.
But Yuji doesn’t respond in the slightest.
On the contrary, he even starts to snore.
Suddenly, Shana feels irritated by this nonchalant attitude of his, despite knowing that in his sleep he can’t help it.
She moves herself into a sitting position.
“YUJIIII!!!!!” she yells as she punches him in the stomach.
“Ouuuch!, uh what?! Shana?! Huh?” Yuji utters in both pain and confusion.
“You where on my side of the bed” she lies without flexing a muscle on her face.
“You are not going to like this, but I will have to go away for a while”.
“Did you attack me just for that” Yuji says slightly annoyed.
“You already said that a few weeks ago.”
He turns his back to her in an attempt to continue sleeping.
“Yuji!” Shana yells again, using her left foot to kick him against his butt, causing him to fall out of bed.
With a smothered “oompf” he falls on the ground, head-first.
“That hurts!” he utters, while he feels his head.
He then turns toward her, most traces of sleep gone from his face.
Shana takes a deep breath.
“ Yuji wake up!” she says again, “ I need to ask you something..”
