Chapter one : Inauspicious Beginnings
As the sun started to fade, the crowded streets of Misaki city slowly started to become more and more deserted, as people rushed on their ways home after a long day. Despite only being January, summer had come early to Japan this year, and the weather had been extremely hot for weeks.
Usually people would rejoice for having a sunny day, but with temperatures warm enough to even melt the asphalt of the roads, people mostly spent their time indoors. However, when one looks carefully, there is one person in this late afternoon rush-hour who does not seem to be in a hurry at all. Despite wearing a school uniform she doesn’t even appear to sweat..
With a loud sigh, Shana throws her long black hair backwards, and goes to sit on a nearby bench.
As the people move in and out of her view, her dark brown eyes are distant.
“A lot has happened in such a short amount of time” she thinks, while her hand encloses the pendant in which Alastor resides.
“In the short time I have been in this place, not only did we kill Friagne the hunter, but we also have encountered plenty of other denizens and flamehazes, and even had to fight Balle Masque twice!
Hey Alastor, do you think that after all the trouble we have been through things will quiet down for a bit?”
The pendant in her hands lights up a bit, as the whirling particles of light inside seem to intensify their movements as a voice answers her.
“Hmm, it is hard to tell. Balle masque certainly has had a set back after Sakai Yuji discovered Konoe Fumina’s true nature. And the fact that you have grown stronger might be a clear sign for new denizens to stay away. But they are unpredictable, and as such we cannot lower our guard.”
“yes, I understand that..” Shana says while dreaming on.
Others might deem the sun’s warmth to be unbearable, for Shana it didn’t pose a problem at all.
With a small amount of power of existence she could control her own body heat easily.
Yuji never really understood that trick, despite her trying to teach it to him many times..
I.. Iove Yuji…
Just to get used to the words the started to repeat them in her head a bit.
That feeling of wanting to be near him, close to him and perhaps ki- DON’T THINK ABOUT THAT!
With a blush on her cheeks Shana stands up, as she starts to walk.
“Everything is better then thinking about that” she mumbles.
Alastor’s pendant doesn’t say a thing, but she knows that he must have heard that.
It only irritates her more.
“It is so confusing, she thinks. Sometimes I just want to punch him but at the same time I…”
Really aggravated she shakes her head.
This is not the time for these stupid thoughts, this was supposed to be her day off!
Yuji seemed surprised when she told him that they would not train with him that night, or the next, and possibly even the night after that. She needed time to think. And to do that, she couldn’t be around him. Somehow her thoughts would get messed up if she was near him, and when she looked him in the eyes it would only get worse.
She clenched her fists.
Why does he have to be so stupid!
Didn’t he see it was all his fault?
That she was unsure, for the first time in her life?
Because of him?
“But I can’t tell him” Shana thinks as she takes a left turn without looking where she is going.
“I really can’t…not yet..”
Only the thought of it made her face turn into that terrible deep red color again.
“But” she said to herself, “ when I return after these few days I will know what to do…and what to say”.
Suddenly, Shana lifts her head, as she feels like she is being watched.
Swiftly her eyes search the crowd.
A crowd consisting of both humans and torches..
She realizes that she has seen far less torches over the last few weeks.
Was someone protecting them, so denizens could not eat anybody to turn them into torches?
Or WAS someone eating them, causing for the encounter of less torches then she was used to?
Knowing that there was no way of answering these questions, Shana dismissed them, as she continued to search for whoever it was that seemed to gaze upon her.
And just like that she sees him.
He looks older then her, but it can’t be that much.
It is a man, possibly in his early twenties, judging on his face.
Just like her he does not seem to be bothered by the weather, as he is wearing a black leather coat that hides most of his body.
He looks well proportioned, possibly an athlete of some sort.
Even his face looks almost perfect, if not for that slightly arrogant look.
His eyes are blue, a rarity in Japan.
On closer inspection, she isn’t even sure he is from Japanese origin.
His long black hair falls down upon his shoulders, but somehow the long hair gives him an almost royal allure.
He looks like a denizen, yet she doesn’t feel anything.
Inmeddiatly he raises a brow, as if he felt that she was investigating him..”but he couldn’t have felt it, right?” Shana thinks in confusion.
“It seems to be just a human…” yet there is something unknown to him..something she cannot place.
“Alastor?” she asks.
“Hmm.. it seems like a human, but I do not know why he is interested in you.”
“Probably some idiot wanting my attention” Shana thinks.
She had seen things like that at Yuji’s high school going on between boys and girls.
Hmpff! Like she, the red-hot-eyed-hunter, was interested!
And with that, she turns around and walks away without looking back.
As she is walking, she feels that someone is following her.
She turns her head, and sees the black-haired stranger coming closer.
He does not even try to hide the fact that is he planning to catch up with her.
As he opens his mouth to form words, she is shocked.
She doesn’t know him but..how does he…
In the split-second Shana realizes all that, the sound reaches her ears: “Hello, Shana…”
